Can’t Sleep? Get Out Of Bed And Do This

My work day ends at midnight. For the last 9 hours I have been making and taking phones calls. I have been responding to emails and, writing blogs for the newsletters we publish 3 times weekly. There are problems during my night that have to be cared for now. So it is no wonder that some nights I put my head on the pillow and stare at the ceiling.

When this would happen I would get so frustrated with myself, but not anymore. Now if I have that problem I just get out of bed and sit on my meditation cushion and breathe. You see the more you struggle to fall asleep the worse is gets. People don’t fall asleep because they are frustrated, they fall asleep because they are calm and relaxed.

For me sitting on my meditation cushion and focusing on the gentle passing in and out of the air through my nostrils has an amazing effect on me. Do thoughts bombard me? Of course they do, but the secret is that I just watch them come and go. They will come and go, when they come just don’t invite them to sit and drink tea.

Usually I can sit for 30 minutes, it is amazingly comforting to me. Some have said that prayer is us speaking to God. Meditation is when we sit and listen to him. I like that. But meditation is not about religious practice. Meditation is about sitting and observing. Being present here at this moment and not running from what is.

I am a practitioner of Vipassana meditation. Vipassana is a way of self-transformation through self-observation. It focuses on the deep interconnection between mind and body, which can be experienced directly by disciplined attention to the physical sensations that form the life of the body, and that continuously interconnect and condition the life of the mind.

There are many different ways to practice mediation for many purposes. The next time that you find yourself not being able to fall asleep, don’t run to the refrigerator for a snack. Don’t run and check your email or your Facebook account, the bright computer screen will keep you awake for hours.

Just sit wherever is comfortable for you and just breathe. Let the body mind connection become relaxed as you concentrate on the breathe coming in and out of your nostrils and allow yourself to become sleepy. If you have ideas for upcoming articles please contact me at [email protected]
