Sleeping With or Without Socks?

There is one thing that I hate in the dead of winter. Waking up in the middle of the night and having might feet touch a cold floor. Yikes! My feet, for the most part, are naturally cold. So for me going to sleep with my favorite woolen sock makes absolute sense.

My feet remain warm and cozy under the blankets as the snow falls and the wind whirls around my house. Snug as a bug in a rug.

Now researchers have entered the debate of whether to sleep with or without your socks on.

Sleep experts have concluded that there’s only one correct answer.

Wearing socks to bed is scientifically proven to be conducive to better night sleep. That’s right, a scientific study links warm feet with falling asleep faster and being less restless during the night.

Why Sleeping With Your Socks On Works.

To understand why sleeping with socks on is good for you, you first have to understand how thermoregulation works. Humans are endotherms, which means we regulate our own body temperature, unlike reptiles, which need the sun’s heat and light to warm up. Our brain works throughout the day to ensure our core temperature stays around 98.6 degrees, despite external influences like your environment or exercise regime.

However, your body doesn’t stay at a strict 98.6 degrees. It varies during the day. It drops at night, reaching its lowest point while you sleep, before starting its rise in the early morning before you wake up. This is why the ideal temperature for sleep is in the cool mid-60s degrees Fahrenheit – it facilitates that natural drop in temperature your brain associates with sleep.

In an interview with Yahoo Style UK, Neil Robinson, Sealy UK’s sleep expert, explained how it all works.

“Having warmer feet causes vasodilation (dilation of the blood vessels) throughout the body, which actually causes your body temperature to drop slightly. When this occurs people fall asleep 15 minutes faster than those who do not.

“This decrease in temperature then mimics the body’s natural pattern, as it prepares itself for sleep, helping to induce tiredness.”

However, professionals say that not all socks reap the benefits of sock-sleeping. If you’re prone to sleeping in the socks you’ve had on your feet all day, it might be time to change your ways.
